Dr. Melvin Wright, Sr. was born December 21, 1936 to the late Noah and Willia Mai Wright in Covington, TN. He transitioned from this earthly life on July 10, 2024 at his home in Jackson, TN.
Melvin was the second of four sons. He confessed his hope in Christ at an early age and joined Greater Shiloh Baptist Church in Brighton, TN, where he actively served in the church and Sunday School. Melvin was united in Holy Matrimony with the love of his life, the former Georgia Ann Robinson, and to that union two children were born.
Dr. Wright was educated in the Tipton County School System, where he attended Fraizer High School. From there, he continued the family legacy of attending Tennessee A & I (now Tennessee State University) where he obtained his undergraduate degree in Bio-Chemistry. After receiving his undergraduate degree, he joined the United States Army and served for two years. Upon completing his two-year tour in the U.S. Army, he applied to Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN, was accepted, and upon completion, received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. After completing Meharry, he moved to Jackson, TN, and set up a prominent practice in dentistry. Shortly after moving to Jackson, he joined St. Paul CME Church and served faithfully in many positions. He was eventually appointed to the position of chairman of the Steward Board where he served very effectively.
He was a dedicated loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 64 years, Georgia Ann Robinson Wright of Jackson, TN; a daughter, Melinda Ann Richardson of Jackson, TN; a son, Melvin Wright, Jr. (Jennifer) of Memphis, TN; three sisters-in-law, Betty J. Avery of Westbury, Long Island, NY, Josephine Wright of Covington, TN, and Evelyn Wright of Nashville, TN; six grandchildren, Dorian, Melvin III, Imani, Malik, Alexis, and Noah; three great grandchildren, Jaylan, Jaslyn, and Ashton; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and an abundance of friends.
Dr. Wright never met a stranger, genuinely loved people, and was always willing to help anyone in any way he could.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that a donation be made in Dr. Melvin Wright, Sr.'s name to the American Heart Association.
